This trendy restaurant-cum-bar tucked within the Turf Club off Bukit Timah, not far from Sixth Avenue, is the latest addition to our line-up of Singapore restaurants.
A recently renovated colonial house surrounded by tall trees, plush tropical greenery and horse stables, Mimolette serves exquisite French fare, with a modern twist and several intriguing contaminations from the New American cuisine.
The restaurant comprises two main areas. On the right is the dining area and on the left is the lounge, a drinking area. The décor features a relaxing, homely atmosphere, with a certain colonial feel. Guests can choose between indoor and outdoor seating: the verandah outside looks like the ideal place for brunch, surrounded as it is by the plush landscape. On weekend nights, on the contrary, the atmosphere is much more pumped up, due to the presence of beautiful women and the late-night outdoor disco.
The man who conceived the menu at Mimolette is Louie Moong, a truly talented chef with over ten years of experience and stints at 3-star Michelin restaurants in France as well as at top regional establishments. Louie is assisted by a young and skilled team that is dedicated to delivering a standard of culinary excellence to its guests.
On the food front, I feel it is difficult to name a single dish that stands out here, since the menu is really well balanced, with no weak spots and no spikes either. Two dishes I loved here were the pan fried Foie Gras with picked abbage, blackcurrant, redcurrant and mixed berries sauce and the black and the Black Cod Fillet with corn mousseline, roasted confit leek and parma ham crisp.
However, where Mimolette stands out in my opinion is at dessert, where I feel two recommendations may be given. Go either for the Angel Fruit Cake with a berries compote and crushed citrus meringues, a kind of sponge cake with plenty of cream and berries, or for the Chocolate Melt, a classic dessert, which is executed impeccably by the chefs at Mimolette.
Although initial reports dubbed Mimolette as a place serving overpriced and ordinary cuisine, we were pleasantly surprised by the freshness and the inventiveness of the execution. Service was very good and attentive and the bill (around 90 dollars) was not beyond reasonableness.
Will surely come back.
